Nairobi, November 2- Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and announced plans to seek a second term in office under the party’s ticket in the 2027 General Election.

The move marks a shift in the governor’s political allegiance after months of speculation about his departure from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Sakaja has also reaffirmed his support for President William Ruto’s broad-based government, which brings together leaders from UDA and ODM.

His decision comes amid growing calls from ODM leaders and supporters for him to join the party before seeking its endorsement for the Nairobi governorship.

However, Sakaja’s bid for the party’s ticket is expected to face competition. ODM leaders have maintained that all aspirants must participate in the party’s nomination process, rather than receive automatic endorsements.

Nairobi ODM chairman George Aladwa, who is also the Makadara MP, has previously insisted that politicians joining the party from other formations must undergo competitive nominations.

Some party delegates have also expressed support for Aladwa’s own gubernatorial ambitions, setting the stage for a potentially contested nomination process.

Sakaja was elected Nairobi governor in August 2022 on a UDA ticket, defeating Jubilee candidate Polycarp Igathe.
