Nairobi, March 7 – In a historic political move, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signaling a major shift in Kenya’s political landscape.
The signing, which took p[lace in KICC, officially marks a collaborative framework between the ruling party and the opposition, marking a new chapter in governance.
Supporters of ODM gathered outside KICC, celebrating the agreement, which is seen as a step towards national unity and political stability. The partnership follows months of discussions and speculation about potential realignments in Kenya’s political sphere.
President Ruto, who has been advocating for political inclusivity, reiterated his commitment to forging alliances with opposition parties to foster development and unity. Raila Odinga, on his part, emphasized the need for patriotism and an end to political divisions, urging Kenyans to embrace cooperation over rivalry.
This MoU comes at a crucial time as Raila recalibrates his political path following his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission Chairperson seat. In recent months, he has been engaging leaders across the country, holding consultations in Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Busia, and other regions to strategize on his next political move.
According to sources, the agreement will see ODM members take up key government roles, further cementing the working relationship between the two political heavyweights. However, the move has faced opposition from some quarters within both parties, with critics questioning the long-term implications of the deal on Kenya’s democratic landscape.
With the MoU now signed, attention turns to its implementation and how it will reshape Kenya’s governance. The agreement is expected to set the tone for new governance strategies, possibly influencing political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
More updates to follow as details of the agreement emerge.
