NAIROBI, Kenya, September 11, 2026 – The Government has called on residents living in flood-prone areas of arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) to relocate to safer locations ahead of expected heavy rainfall.
Acting Principal Secretary for the State Department for ASALs and Regional Development Caroline Karugu said pastoralist and agro-pastoral communities face significant risks from extreme weather conditions.
Karugu noted that authorities were conducting flood-risk mapping and community sensitisation exercises across river basins and low-lying areas to identify regions vulnerable to flooding.
She urged residents in high-risk zones to take early warning messages seriously and move to safer ground before rainfall intensifies.
The Government is also working to improve early warning systems and strengthen disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities. Karugu emphasised that early action would help minimise loss of lives, displacement and property damage.
Residents have been advised to monitor official weather and disaster management updates and cooperate with local authorities on evacuation and other preventive measures.
The preparedness efforts come as the country anticipates increased rainfall during the October–December season, with authorities stressing the importance of acting before extreme weather events occur.
