Nairobi, October 8- Nairobi County has identified 246 flood hotspots across the city as authorities intensify preparations for the expected El Niño rains.

The hotspots have been mapped and geocoded to help emergency teams identify areas that may require early intervention, evacuation and deployment of rescue equipment.

Roysambu has the highest number of mapped locations at 39, followed by Ruaraka with 33 and Embakasi South with 20. Other areas identified include Embakasi North, Dagoretti South, Starehe, Makadara, Kibra and Lang’ata.

The county has also identified areas along the Nairobi, Ngong and Mathare rivers as particularly vulnerable to flooding, with authorities warning that heavy rains could cause flash floods, river overflow, road disruptions and displacement.

A multi-agency team has prepared different scenarios, with the worst-case scenario estimating that up to 100,000 people, or about 20,000 households, could be affected.

Authorities are also working to clear drainage systems, prepare evacuation sites and position emergency supplies ahead of the October-December rainy season
