Nairobi, Kenya – Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s fate now lies with the Senate, which will debate and vote on the impeachment motion against him next Thursday. This follows the National Assembly’s decision to impeach him after 281 Members of Parliament voted in favor of his removal.

The Senate’s upcoming session will determine whether Gachagua remains in office. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna remarked on the gravity of the situation, stating, “This matter is immensely unique and has elicited immense public attention. Given the mood of the house, especially on the minority side, I respectfully decline to second that motion.”

The National Assembly had earlier impeached Gachagua on allegations of gross violations of the Constitution, including promoting ethnic discrimination and engaging in corruption. Gachagua has vehemently denied all accusations, maintaining that he has been a loyal deputy to President William Ruto.

The Senate vote will be a critical step in concluding the impeachment process, with the nation watching closely to see the outcome next week.
