Nairobi, Kenya, October 14- Lillian Auma Aoko, widely known as Princess Jully, the iconic Benga artist and creator of the hit song “Dunia Mbaya,” has passed away. She died on October 12, 2024, while receiving treatment at the Migori County Referral Hospital.

Her son confirmed that Princess Jully had been undergoing treatment at the facility for around two months and ultimately succumbed to multiple organ failure.

Princess Jully gained national recognition with her powerful song “Dunia Mbaya,” which was inspired by the loss of her friends due to their lifestyle choices. The song became a significant part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.

Initially a background vocalist in her late husband Julius Okumu’s band, Jolly Boys, Princess Jully took over leadership after his death in 1997, steering the band to great success. She followed in the footsteps of renowned Congolese artist Mbilia Bel, continuing her husband’s musical legacy. Julius, who performed under the stage name Prince Jully, left a legacy that she carried on by adopting his stage name.

Princess Jully was also a member of the all-female music group Divas of the Nile, alongside Suzanna Owiyo, the late Achieng Abura, and Mercy Myra.
