Nairobi, February 5 – A Mombasa-based doctor, Dias Jumba Wabwire, has been suspended by the Clinical Officers Council after being accused of sexually assaulting a patient at Pandya Hospital.
Wabwire allegedly raped a 30-year-old patient undergoing dialysis at the facility in the early hours of January 31, 2025. He was charged with one count of rape and pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Alex Ithuku at the Mombasa High Court. He was released on a Ksh 500,000 bond, and the case is set for mention on February 17, 2025.
Following the allegations, the Clinical Officers Council announced the immediate suspension of Wabwire’s practicing license while investigations are underway. CEO Ibrahim Wako confirmed that the council is working with law enforcement and will take disciplinary action based on due process. Although no formal complaint has been filed with the council, a team has been deployed to conduct a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has strongly condemned the incident, claiming that the victim had previously been raped by the same suspect. The organization has called for the arrest of additional individuals accused of obstructing justice.
FIDA lawyer Jane Onyango urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to investigate hospital staff members who may have been aware of the assault but failed to act. She emphasized FIDA’s commitment to monitoring the case and ensuring justice for the survivor.
