Nairobi, March 11- The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has issued a warning about the growing misuse of private rental properties, particularly those listed on Airbnb, as venues for drug-related activities.
Recent reports highlight an alarming trend where these properties are increasingly being used for illicit drug parties, alcohol consumption, and, tragically, fatal overdoses. This issue is notably prevalent in urban areas such as Nairobi, where young people are reportedly using these rental spaces for drug-fueled social gatherings.
NACADA’s CEO, Anthony Omerikwa, stressed the gravity of the situation, noting, “Over the past year, we’ve seen numerous incidents involving young individuals using drugs in Airbnb properties, some of which have led to tragic fatalities.” He called for swift action, urging Airbnb hosts and property managers to be more vigilant in screening guests and reporting any suspicious activities to the authorities.
In response to this growing concern, NACADA is intensifying its efforts to combat illegal drug use. The authority is working closely with law enforcement to monitor and address drug abuse in both public and private settings, including Airbnb rentals.
A NACADA report reveals that 23% of young adults aged 18-24 in urban areas have participated in drug use at social events, with a significant portion of these incidents occurring in private venues like Airbnbs. To address this, NACADA is urging the public to stay alert and report any questionable behavior.
