Nairobi, March 26- Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has responded sharply to President William Ruto’s remarks questioning his competence as a former Attorney General, particularly regarding the establishment of the Waqf Commission.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, March 26, Muturi clarified that the Waqf Act does not mandate the creation of a Muslim Endowment Fund, as suggested by the president. He explained that Waqf is a religious or charitable endowment established by an individual of the Muslim faith and managed by the Waqf Commission.

Ruto made his comments a day earlier, on March 25, during an Iftar dinner with Muslim leaders at State House. He criticized Muturi’s handling of legal matters related to Waqf, calling him “fairly incompetent” in the role of Attorney General. The president assured that his current Attorney General, Dorcas Oduor, would ensure the commission is properly established.

Muturi’s response comes amid growing tensions between him and the Ruto administration. In recent months, he has been vocal about governance issues, particularly the rise in abduction cases. Speaking on March 21, Muturi reaffirmed his commitment to accountability in government and dismissed speculation about his resignation, insisting that stepping down would not resolve the country’s challenges.
