Nairobi, July 10- Kenya’s Chief Kadhi, Sheikh Athman AbdulHalim Hussein, has passed away in Mombasa.
His death was announced on Thursday, July 10, 2025, by Sheikh Jamaludin Osman, the Imam of Jamia Mosque, through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“With great sorrow, I share the news that our Sheikh AbdulHalim Hussein has passed away in Mombasa. Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return,” the Imam wrote.
He also confirmed that Sheikh AbdulHalim would be laid to rest in Mombasa later in the day after Asr prayers.
Sheikh AbdulHalim was appointed Chief Kadhi in July 2023 by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), selected from five shortlisted candidates after the position was advertised in April that year. He took over from Sheikh Ahmed Muhdhar, who retired after 12 years of service upon reaching the retirement age of 60.
As Chief Kadhi, Sheikh AbdulHalim led the Kadhi’s Courts, which handle civil matters under Islamic law such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance only when all parties involved are Muslims and agree to the court’s jurisdiction.
