Nairobi, March 4-Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, setting the stage for a major upgrade of the country’s main aviation hub.

The project will see the construction of a new passenger terminal to increase capacity, alongside improvements to existing facilities to ease congestion and improve efficiency. Planned upgrades include enhancements to runways, taxiways and support infrastructure to allow smoother aircraft movement and faster turnaround times.

A key feature of the plan is the development of an Airport City and a Special Economic Zone around JKIA. The government says the move is aimed at attracting investment in logistics, manufacturing, trade and other aviation-related services, positioning the airport as a central driver of economic growth.

According to Chirchir, the expansion is necessary as passenger and cargo numbers continue to rise beyond the airport’s original design capacity. The government has now invited bids for the project, marking the start of the procurement process for one of Kenya’s most significant infrastructure developments.
