Nairobi, July 21- Activist Boniface Mwangi was released on a Ksh1 million bond by the Kahawa Law Court on Monday, July 21, 2025, after pleading not guilty to charges of unlawful possession of ammunition and teargas canisters.
This came after the State dropped earlier terrorism charges against him following his Saturday arrest. Mwangi now faces two counts — possession of three teargas canisters and one round of ammunition without lawful authority.
According to the charge sheet, Mwangi was found at Mageuzi Hub in Nairobi with three teargas canisters and a 7.62×21mm blank round on July 19, 2025.
His legal team, led by Martha Karua, applied to have the case moved to Milimani Law Courts, arguing that without terrorism charges, Kahawa Court had no jurisdiction. The case will be mentioned again on August 19, 2025, for pretrial directions.
Mwangi was arrested after DCI officers raided his Lukenya home in Machakos County, linking him to alleged terrorist activities during the June 25 protests. The DCI claimed to have recovered teargas canisters, blank ammunition, nine external hard drives, two laptops, company seals, stamps, cheque books, and tax documents.
