Nairobi, August 27-Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially announced his intention to vie for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

In a televised interview on Tuesday night, Gachagua affirmed his resolve to appear on the ballot, expressing confidence in both his qualifications and his ability to rally nationwide support.

“I am offering myself as a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya. I am qualified, I have support, and I am seeking even more support. I will be on the ballot,” he said.

Addressing questions about his eligibility following his impeachment and ongoing legal issues, Gachagua maintained that the Constitution safeguards the right of every Kenyan to seek elective office until all legal avenues are exhausted.

“The Constitution allows you to contest for office even with a conviction, provided you have not exhausted the legal remedies available. My impeachment has not yet been determined by the Supreme Court,” he explained on Citizen TV.

He pointed to the case of Sirisia MP John Waluke, who despite a conviction, successfully appealed and was cleared to run for office, as precedent supporting his position.

Gachagua, now positioning himself among opposition leaders eyeing the presidency, dismissed claims of being a tribalist. He insisted that his political stance is rooted in nationalism and unity, while arguing that his affection for his community has been unfairly portrayed as ethnic favoritism.
