At least two people were shot dead after police intervened to control chaos during the public viewing of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s body at Kasarani International Stadium in Nairobi.
The confrontation reportedly began when a group attempted to force their way into the VIP section, where morticians were preparing the body for viewing. Police said one more person was injured in the commotion.
Nairobi Police Director of Operations Adamson Bungei confirmed the incident, noting that investigations are underway.
“We have at least two deaths for now,” he said, adding that the shootings occurred amid clashes between security officers and mourners.
Witnesses reported gunfire and teargas at the scene as police struggled to disperse the increasingly unruly crowd, which had demanded quicker access to view Raila’s body following its arrival from India.
