Nairobi, September 18- Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced that the county government will remove billboards that have been erected without the necessary approvals. The move is part of efforts to regulate outdoor advertising and address concerns over the growing number of structures across the city.

Sakaja said the county had identified about 832 unauthorised billboards. He also raised concerns about the placement and design of some digital billboards, noting that their bright lights could interfere with motorists’ ability to see traffic signals.

The governor said advertising companies had previously been given an opportunity to regulate themselves under a moratorium on new billboard installations. However, some firms allegedly continued putting up structures without approval. The county has also been removing advertisements that obstruct pedestrian walkways, particularly in the Central Business District.

According to Sakaja, Nairobi loses an estimated Sh205 million in quarterly revenue due to illegal billboards.
