Nairobi, Kenya, October 29- Entrepreneur Shiquo HiiStyles has gained significant traction in Nairobi by offering affordable imports from China. With a range spanning shoes, handbags, kitchenware, blankets, and luggage, her prices are often nearly half—or even less—compared to those of other importers and retailers.
Her success has sparked widespread interest on social media, especially TikTok, where Shiquo showcases her sourcing process in China and explains her pricing strategy. Some fans have even playfully dubbed her the “new China Square,” asking her to start importing items like wigs, airplanes, and cars. While her followers appreciate the budget-friendly prices, some Nairobi business owners are less enthusiastic, accusing her of undercutting the market and speculating about counterfeit goods.
In a recent interview with Lynn Ngugi on October 27, import expert Ray, who coaches on the import business, explained that Shiquo effectively combines the roles of importer, wholesaler, and retailer, allowing her to bypass additional middleman costs and pass the savings to customers. Ray addressed criticism from other business owners, suggesting that instead of feeling threatened by Shiquo’s popularity, they could consider becoming more active on social media themselves.
Ray also highlighted the complexity of the import business, noting that while Shiquo’s methods have drawn a loyal customer base, importing is challenging, with multiple hidden costs and risks involved. For instance, while a product might cost Sh600 at the factory in China, it could end up at Sh1,000 after accounting for all expenses by the time it arrives in Kenya.
