Nairobi, Kenya, November 20-Kenya Unveils New Banknotes Featuring Enhanced Security and Modern Features
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has introduced updated banknotes for circulation, a significant milestone in the nation’s currency evolution. The newly released notes, available in denominations of Ksh50, Ksh100, Ksh200, Ksh500, and Ksh1,000, feature the signatures of CBK Governor Kamau Thugge and Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo.
Key Features of the New Banknotes
The updated banknotes include several new elements aimed at enhancing security and usability:
- Signatures: Governor Kamau Thugge and Treasury PS Chris Kiptoo’s signatures are prominently displayed.
- Year of Print: The notes are marked with the year 2024.
- Security Threads: Advanced threads with color-changing effects specific to each denomination improve anti-counterfeiting measures.
Despite these updates, CBK assured the public that the older banknotes remain valid and in circulation alongside the new ones, ensuring minimal disruption to daily transactions and business operations.
“We wish to update the public that the release of KSh 50, KSh 100, KSh 200, and KSh 500 denominations is now in progress. Other than the changes highlighted above, all other features of the banknotes remain the same as those issued in 2019,” CBK stated.
A Tool Against Corruption
The introduction of the new notes serves not only as a modernization effort but also as part of Kenya’s ongoing fight against corruption. CBK highlighted that law enforcement has uncovered significant amounts of cash hoarded in private residences, emphasizing the importance of stringent security features in combating illicit financial activities.
The updated notes retain the iconic depiction of the “Big Five” animals, each denomination carrying a distinct concept, reflecting Kenya’s heritage while adopting a modern look.
This rollout marks a new chapter for Kenya’s financial system, balancing innovation with continuity to support a smooth transition for citizens and businesses alike.
