Nairobi. February 21- Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

His death occurred less than a week after he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following several days of treatment at home.

Chebukati served as the IEBC chairperson for six years until his retirement in 2023, overseeing the 2017 and 2022 general elections during his tenure.

Born on December 22, 1961, he attended Lenana High School in Nairobi County before enrolling at the University of Nairobi (UoN), where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Law. Additionally, he pursued a Master’s degree in Business Administration at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

A member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Chebukati first gained public recognition in 2007 when he contested the Saboti parliamentary seat. Running on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, he was defeated by Eugene Wamalwa, who was vying under the Party of National Unity (PNU).

Following his loss, Chebukati resigned from ODM and later applied for the position of IEBC chairperson, a role to which he was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In his personal life, he married Mary Chebukati in 1990, and together they had three children: sons Jonathan and Emmanuel, and a daughter, Rachaell.
