Nairobi, July 14- The government is reviving its plan to equip police officers with body cameras, this time with a focus on their deployment during public protests.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announces during an interview on TV47 that the move is aimed at improving transparency and accountability in police operations, especially during demonstrations. He says the cameras will help provide clear, unbiased evidence of how security officers and protesters behave on the ground.

“The goal is to have body cameras to identify the true instigators during protests whether it is the demonstrators or the police officers,” Mudavadi explains.

He adds that while body cameras can be effective in reducing abuse and misinformation, the rollout will require substantial funding and must undergo proper budgetary approvals. “This is not just about buying gadgets. It has to be part of a structured accountability system,” he says.

Mudavadi defends police officers, pointing out that the government continues to invest in professional training for law enforcement. He urges officers to uphold professionalism in their work.

He also accuses unnamed individuals of trying to pressure President William Ruto by pushing for unconstitutional means to change the government. “There are people who keep trying to force unconstitutional power grabs,” he states.
