Nairobi, September 4- Motorists are calling on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Police Service (NPS) to step up security measures following a series of reported attacks along major highways.
Concerns have intensified after a driver travelling from Kisumu towards Busia reported being attacked near Maseno on Friday morning. The driver said a group of youths allegedly smashed his vehicle’s windscreen before pursuing him while armed with pangas and rungus.
The incident has raised alarm among long-distance drivers who frequently use the Kisumu-Busia highway, particularly at night.
The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LODDCA) has urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid the route after dark where possible. The association also called on the police and DCI to increase patrols along the highway to protect road users.
Security concerns have also been reported on the Nairobi Expressway. A video circulating online shows a group of men allegedly stopping vehicles and robbing motorists in broad daylight before fleeing in a vehicle.
The reported incidents have left motorists questioning how such attacks can take place on major highways, including controlled-access roads such as the Nairobi Expressway.
Drivers have since expressed concern over their safety, especially those who travel long distances at night, and are demanding stronger security measures along the country’s major roads.
Despite the growing concerns and reports of attacks, police authorities had not issued an official response by the time of publication.
