Nairobi, September 18- Former President Uhuru Kenyatta attracted attention on Friday after making a light-hearted reference to the “Sponyo” label during a funeral ceremony in Murang’a.
Uhuru was attending the burial of the mother of former State House Comptroller George Kariuki, where he shared the platform with former presidential aspirant Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.
As he concluded his remarks, the former president thanked mourners and signed off by saying, “Asanteni… kutoka kwa sponyo.” His comment elicited interest because the term has recently featured in political exchanges involving President William Ruto and his critics.
The nickname is associated with claims that Uhuru has been financially supporting political activities, an allegation that has been part of the wider political debate. By using the term himself in a public setting, Uhuru appeared to turn the reference into a moment of humour.
