Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark made history as she was crowned Miss Universe 2024, becoming the first-ever Dane to win the title.
The 21-year-old competitive dancer, entrepreneur, and aspiring lawyer triumphed over more than 120 contestants during the grand event held in Mexico City on Saturday night. She received her crown from last year’s winner, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua, amidst applause from fellow contestants.
The finale featured a performance by singer Robin Thicke and was hosted by actor Mario Lopez, known for “Saved by the Bell,” alongside former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo.
The competition began with over 120 contestants being narrowed to a top 30 through preliminary events, including a vibrant national costume showcase. From there, the semi-finalists competed in swimwear, and 12 advanced to an evening gown round. The final five then answered questions on topics like resilience and leadership.
When asked how she would live differently without fear of judgment, Theilvig confidently stated she wouldn’t change a thing, saying, “I live by each day.” She later encouraged viewers to “keep fighting … no matter where you come from,” emphasizing her desire to inspire change.
The first runner-up was Chidimma Adetshina of Nigeria, while Maria Fernanda Beltran of Mexico took third place. Thailand’s Suchata Chuangsri and Venezuela’s Ileana Marquez Pedroza rounded out the top five, with Pedroza making history as the first mother to reach the final stage following the removal of several competition restrictions.
This year marked a transformative milestone in Miss Universe’s 72-year history, as the pageant allowed women over 28 to compete for the first time. More than 20 finalists exceeded the previous age limit, including Malta’s Beatrice Njoya, the first contestant in her 40s to reach the finale.
The removal of age, marital, and motherhood restrictions reflects the organization’s efforts to modernize the pageant and embrace diversity.
