Nairobi, Kenya- Kenyans may have been exposed to another dangerous product after the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) flagged a 2-million-kilogram shipment of rice.
Leaked KEBS documents revealed that the rice, originally declared unsafe for human consumption, was redirected into the Kenyan market.
The consignment, imported from Pakistan in September and October this year, failed the aflatoxin test. KEBS stated that the rice contained aflatoxin levels exceeding the permissible limit, rendering it unsafe to eat.
The report detailed that 83,000 bags of rice, each weighing 25kg, were transported from Mombasa’s Kilindini port to Nairobi, where they were repackaged and distributed to various wholesalers and retailers.
Upon discovering that the substandard rice had reached the market, KEBS launched a crackdown but managed to seize only 23,000 kg. Market surveillance officers recovered the tainted rice at the Central Business Park in Nairobi’s industrial area.
