Nairobi, Kenya, December 3- Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho faced sharp criticism from Kenyans following his remarks targeting social media users who criticize President William Ruto’s administration.

Speaking at a public rally in Taita Taveta on Monday, December 2, Joho accused some critics of using the government’s free Wi-Fi to attack its leadership. “There are people in Nairobi with smartphones and data—possibly the free Wi-Fi provided by Ruto—who spend their time criticizing the government. While they talk, we are on the ground working,” he stated.

Joho, known for his outspoken nature, warned that he would confront bloggers who use platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to oppose the government. “A country cannot be built through the internet. It cannot be built by people whose work revolves around social media. Let me put them on notice: if they bring us trouble, we can also bring equal trouble,” he added.

His remarks sparked backlash from a section of Kenyans, some of whom called for a boycott of Joho’s businesses. Critics rallied others to share details of his enterprises to encourage the public to stop supporting them.

@amerix – Joho became a cabinet secretary because of X. Posts, hashtags, and spaces. Have some shame, ndugu.

@edgarwabwire_ – Blogger Cyprian Nyakundi set to go heads on with CS Joho following his remarks about social media users. Nyakundi has called on his followers to share any information regarding Joho’s side chicks, dealings, or boyfriends. It’s boiling nicely! We Will be There!

@Son_of_Laikipia – In a serious country Joho should be in a maximum prison and any person who appoints him to any office confined in a mental facility….but we are a joke of a country and a mad man holds the reins of power

@Kibet_bull – It’s via Twitter, Facebook and TikTok that made Finance Bill to be dropped, the Adani deal, it has given sleepless nights to William Ruto. A D minus student like Hassan Joho won’t resonate
