Nairobi, Kenya, January 28- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pledged to do everything in his power to prevent President William Ruto from securing a second term in office. Speaking on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the DAP-Kenya headquarters in Nairobi, Gachagua declared that he would rally resources and allies to ensure Ruto’s presidency ends after one term.
Gachagua accused President Ruto of being a major obstacle to Kenya’s progress, alleging that State House has become a hub of corruption.
During the press briefing, Gachagua criticized his former boss, dismissing Ruto’s claims that he was impeached due to corruption and incompetence. He clarified that the only “incompetence” he accepts responsibility for was his refusal to blindly agree with the President’s decisions, particularly his shift away from the promises made during their campaign.
“The only incompetence I own is standing firm against being a yes man and insisting that the President honor the campaign manifesto we promised Kenyans. Instead, he took offense and orchestrated my removal,” said Gachagua.
The former Deputy President, who was impeached less than two years into office, also accused Ruto of surrounding himself with a compliant cabinet that lacks the courage to challenge him. Gachagua likened the cabinet to a “praise and worship team” and “flower girls” who merely follow orders without queestion.
Gachagua made these remarks during the launch of DAP-Kenya’s new offices, an event attended by key opposition leaders, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.
