Nairobi, Kenya, October 11 – Popular matatu conductor Gerald Mwangi, affectionately known as ‘Makanga Bae,’ has passed away while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital following a severe road accident that led to the amputation of one of his legs.
Mwangi, who gained widespread attention last year for his striking looks and clean-cut image in a profession often stereotyped as rough and unkempt, worked with the renowned Super Metro Sacco. His untimely death has left many shocked, as he had become a beloved figure in the public eye.
Popular content creator Murugi Mundi confirmed the tragic news, sharing a heartfelt tribute on social media: “RIP Cuz, you had too much life left to live, we will miss you.”
In the days leading up to his passing, Super Metro Sacco made an urgent appeal for blood donations, hoping to save his life after the accident. Despite receiving medical care and undergoing surgery, his condition worsened. The amputation was a final attempt to stabilize him after his injuries became critical.
Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals and overwhelming public support, Mwangi succumbed to his injuries. His family, devastated by the loss, described him as a passionate and hardworking individual who took pride in his work.
“He was so passionate about his job. He showed that no matter what work you’re in, you should be excellent at it and stand out. RIP, Gero,” his cousin wrote.
His family expressed their shock, saying they had been hopeful for his recovery, as his condition had been improving before his sudden decline.
