Nairobi, December 2- Kenya has recorded a notable increase in new HIV infections, with 19,991 cases reported in 2024 a 19 percent rise from the previous year.
Updated data now shows that ten counties continue to drive the bulk of new infections, collectively accounting for about 60 percent of all cases nationwide. Nairobi remains the most affected, topping the list with 3,045 new infections.
Migori follows with 1,572 cases, while Kisumu recorded 1,341. Homa Bay comes next with 1,180 new infections, underscoring persistent challenges in the lake region.
The remaining counties in the top ten are Busia, Siaya, Kakamega, Nakuru, Mombasa and Bungoma, all of which recorded significant increases and continue to contribute heavily to the national trend.
Health officials say the updated figures highlight the urgency for intensified, county-specific interventions, especially in these hotspot regions, to curb further spread. Young people aged 15 to 34 remain the most vulnerable demographic, with experts warning that prevention and awareness efforts must be strengthened.
